On February 16th, 2023, the pupils of the 10f of the secondary school in Herzogenaurach came to our chair for an information and experimentation day. The students have chosen the science branch at their school. The exchange was initiated by a former employee, Julia Lorenz, who now teaches biology and chemistry at the school, and Dr. Sophia Sonnewald.

After a brief presentation of the goals of our research and how foreign genes get into the plants, the students cut plasmid DNA from bacteria themselves using restriction enzymes and then separated it in the agarose gel. They were supported by our collaborators, Stephen Reid, Dr. Günter Lehrtz, Dr. Christian Schuy. The experimental work was complemented by a visit to the laboratories, the plant tissue culture and the greenhouse.

A highlight was the study of a small experiment prepared by Rabih Medhi that demonstrates the transport of sugars in plants using a fluorescent dye. All in all, it was a very exciting and varied day for the students, but also for us at the university.
